Violence Against Palestinian Americans in the West Bank: Recent Incidents Raise Concerns
A Palestinian American man named Khamis Ayyad passed away in the Israeli-occupied West Bank following an altercation with settlers, as confirmed by U.S. officials. Ayyad, who was in his 40s, died from smoke inhalation in Silwad, a village in the central West Bank near Israeli settlements. The Palestinian health ministry reported that fires were deliberately set by settlers on homes and vehicles in Silwad. The U.S. State Department expressed condolences to Ayyad's family and condemned the violence, offering consular assistance without further comment. Ayyad was laid to rest on Friday.
The Palestinian Authority stated that several villages around Silwad were also targeted by settlers, resulting in the destruction of vehicles, homes, and farmlands. Witnesses reported that Israeli forces used live rounds and tear gas against residents following the settlers' attacks. Israel's military mentioned that police were investigating the incident, noting the presence of Hebrew graffiti and a burnt vehicle at the scene but had not made any arrests. Ayyad's death marks the most recent case of a Palestinian American passing away in the West Bank in the past three weeks.
Saifullah Kamel Musallet, a 20-year-old man from Tampa, was fatally beaten by settlers while defending his family's land in the town of Sinjil, north of Ramallah, in July. U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee urged Israel to thoroughly investigate Musallet's murder, emphasizing the need for accountability for such criminal acts. The incidents involving Palestinian Americans in the West Bank have raised concerns about the safety and security of individuals in the region.
