Update on Downtown Street Beating Case: Suspect to be Released on Bond Amid Controversy
One of the suspects involved in a violent street beating in downtown will be released on bond soon. Jermaine Matthews, 39, is set to leave Hamilton County Jail after paying a $270,000 bond. His attorney, Brandon Fox, mentioned that Matthews will have an ankle monitor as part of his bond conditions to ensure compliance with the rules.
Matthews faced charges of assault, felony assault, and aggravated riot related to the brawl that gained national attention. During a bond hearing, Fox clarified that Matthews did not initiate the fight and was not responsible for knocking out the male victim seen in the viral video. Fox also claimed that one of the victims used racial slurs before the altercation.
Matthews' next court appearance is scheduled for August 8, as per jail records. A Cincinnati Police detective disputed that the slap seen in the video initiated the fight, stating that there is video evidence contradicting that claim. Merriweather's bond is set at $500,000, while Vernon's bond is $200,000. Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge mentioned that two additional suspects have been charged but have not been apprehended yet.
