Surviving the Wilderness: A High School Student's Harrowing Rattlesnake Encounter in Pisgah National Forest
A high school student had a harrowing experience while fishing in the mountainous Pisgah National Forest in North Carolina. Zain Shah, 17, was bitten by a timber rattlesnake more than 2 miles away from the nearest road. The incident occurred during an end-of-high-school fishing trip with his friend Kevin Foley. The remote forest, known for its scenic beauty, proved to be a challenging location for the rescue operation that involved multiple agencies, including the N.C. National Guard and the Charlotte Fire Department.
The bite occurred along the banks of Lost Cove Creek, leading to Zain being airlifted to Johnson City Medical Center in Tennessee. Despite initially feeling a painless prick, he soon realized the severity of the situation upon seeing the rattlesnake and the two red dots on his foot. With no cell service, they called 911, and the decision was made to wait for help rather than attempt the long trek back to their vehicle. Timber rattlesnakes are known for their potent venom, capable of causing serious harm to humans.
Zain experienced tingling sensations and signs of shock as the venom took effect. The rescue operation involved hoisting him up to a Black Hawk helicopter with the assistance of Avery County first responders. At the hospital, blood work revealed dangerous changes in his system, prompting the administration of twelve vials of antivenom over three days. Zain's gratitude extends to the 911 operator, his friend Kevin Foley, and the numerous individuals involved in his rescue.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Zain acknowledges the importance of the buddy system in outdoor activities and vows to always have a companion on future excursions. Despite the frightening experience, he remains determined to return to the mountains, appreciating the beauty of the wilderness while prioritizing safety and preparedness. The timely response of the rescue teams and the support of those around him played a crucial role in ensuring his survival, leaving Zain with a newfound appreciation for the value of teamwork and preparedness in outdoor adventures.
