Rescue Operation Unveils Horrific Abuse in Bulgarian Care Homes: Justice Minister Calls for Action

Numerous individuals were saved from two illicit care homes in Bulgaria where they were reportedly enduring severe abuse, according to Bulgarian officials. The Justice Minister referred to the facilities as "houses of horrors" where victims were allegedly mistreated, restrained, and drugged. Approximately 75 individuals were rescued from these facilities in the eastern part of the country, which were disguised as health centers offering rooms for rent at a monthly rate slightly above 400 euros. Disturbing images of the appalling conditions in the facilities and victims being taken away in ambulances were released by the ministry.

The Justice Minister also shared an image with the media showing elderly residents with their legs bound together. Nineteen individuals were rescued from one location, while 56 were rescued from the other. The regional prosecutor's office in Stara Zagora reported that five individuals had been arrested, and an investigation was initiated into allegations of kidnapping, violence, and negligence. Shockingly, one elderly woman had reportedly not left the establishment for four years, and another resident who attempted to escape was allegedly caught, beaten, and left unconscious.

The justice ministry revealed that some of the rescued individuals had their feet tied and were sedated, confined in rooms without proper bedding, with window handles removed, and isolated from the outside world. The Justice Minister emphasized that inspections of nursing homes and hospices are being conducted to combat property fraud targeting vulnerable individuals. These incidents are part of ongoing investigations into property mafia schemes exploiting helpless individuals, as stated by the Bulgarian News Agency.

Criticism from international organizations regarding the substandard conditions of health facilities in Bulgaria, the poorest country in the European Union, is not uncommon. The lack of adequate facilities for the elderly has led to the emergence of illegal care centers. The government's efforts to address these issues and protect vulnerable individuals are crucial in ensuring the well-being and safety of all citizens.
