National Protests Erupt Against ICE: SEIU Demands Release of Labor Leader David Huerta

Tensions between U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), California leaders, and immigrants in Los Angeles have led to new anti-ICE demonstrations across the country. President Donald Trump authorized the National Guard to intervene after violent clashes erupted during protests in LA. The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) organized rallies in over a dozen cities following the arrest of one of its members, David Huerta, during the LA riots. The protests in LA involved clashes between protestors and federal agents, prompting the deployment of around 2,000 National Guard troops.
The SEIU is speaking out against ICE actions targeting working communities and immigrants, particularly in response to Huerta's arrest. Huerta, a prominent labor and civil rights leader, was detained for obstructing agents during a worksite raid. Rallies are planned in cities like New York City, Philadelphia, Seattle, and Atlanta to protest ICE actions and show support for those affected by immigration policies.
Protests against the Trump administration's immigration policies have been ongoing since January 20, with demonstrations in support of detained foreign students, individuals deported under the Alien Enemies Act, and those targeted for expressing dissenting views. The administration's stance on sanctuary cities and immigration enforcement has sparked concerns among immigrant advocates about the individuals being detained by ICE, including those with no criminal records or seeking legal status.
The SEIU, led by international president April Verrett, is demanding Huerta's release and an end to workplace raids targeting working communities. The White House has called for increased immigration enforcement personnel and resources, while former Vice President Kamala Harris criticized the deployment of the National Guard in Los Angeles as a dangerous escalation. U.S. Northern Command announced the deployment of 2,000 California Army National Guard soldiers to protect federal personnel and property in the greater Los Angeles area.
The protests and rallies reflect a broader national debate on immigration policies and enforcement actions. The SEIU and other advocacy groups are advocating for the rights and dignity of working people affected by ICE actions, while the Trump administration emphasizes the need for stricter immigration enforcement. The ongoing tensions highlight the complex and contentious issues surrounding immigration in the United States.
