Challenges and Solutions at Expo 2025 in Osaka: Addressing Bacterial Contamination and Midge Issues

The Expo 2025 in Osaka has temporarily suspended its popular daily fountain shows and closed a shallow pool area due to bacterial contamination that exceeded safety limits. The Water Plaza's aquatic show has been halted since legionella bacteria levels were found to be 20 times higher than allowed. Additionally, the Forest of Tranquility, a relaxation area with a shallow reservoir, has been shut down for cleaning due to the same contamination, which can lead to pneumonia.

The Expo site has faced various challenges, including swarms of midges bothering visitors and the detection of methane gas before the opening in April. Despite efforts to control the midges with insecticides, the issue persists. Organizers suspect the Water Plaza as the source of the midges and are implementing measures like installing insect screens to address the problem.

To address the bacterial contamination, organizers have increased sanitation measures, cleaned drainage pipes, and improved water circulation at the affected water areas. They are working to obtain approval from health authorities for the reopening of the reservoir. Hiroyuki Ishige, the secretary general of the Japan Association for the 2025 World Exposition, acknowledged the need for quicker action in response to the contamination levels and apologized for any inconvenience caused to visitors.

Despite the challenges, there have been no reported health issues related to the bacterial contamination at the Expo. The event, which features participants from over 160 countries, regions, and organizations showcasing futuristic exhibits, is expected to attract 28 million visitors until mid-October.
