Sony Music Publishing Acquires Hipgnosis Songs Group: A New Chapter in Music Publishing

Sony Music Publishing has recently acquired Hipgnosis Songs Group, a subsidiary of Recognition Music Group. This acquisition includes the catalog of 4,400 copyrights originally from Big Deal Music, featuring songs by artists like Shawn Mendes, Panic! At the Disco, and One Direction. The HSG catalog also includes hits like “Taste,” “Espresso,” and “Feather” by Sabrina Carpenter, among others. Sony Music Publishing will now own and administer the Hipgnosis Songs Group catalog, providing full-service publishing for its songwriters and clients worldwide.

The deal comes after Hipgnosis rebranded as Recognition Music Group, consolidating its related titles under one name. Hipgnosis Songs Group was previously under the ownership of Blackstone and was undergoing a strategic review. The acquisition by Sony Music Publishing further solidifies its position as a leading publisher in the music industry, enhancing its presence in popular music.

The transition of Hipgnosis Songs Group to Sony Music Publishing's services and systems will take place over the next few months. The company is committed to ensuring that all clients receive the same high level of service they are accustomed to. Current HSG clients can continue to reach out to their existing team for any questions or creative inquiries. Royalty payments will still be processed through HSG's system until further updates are provided.

By acquiring the hits owned or administered by HSG, Sony Music Publishing strengthens its position as a dominant player in the music industry. The company aims to elevate and support the work of impactful songwriters, aligning with its mission to represent a diverse roster of contemporary and classic songwriters. The acquisition marks a significant milestone for Sony Music Publishing and its commitment to the music community.
