Jardin de Santa Cecilia: A Community Garden's Fight for Solidarity and Survival

A community garden in Queens, known for its anti-Israel stance, faced closure by the city but was granted a temporary reprieve by Judge Hasa Kingo. The former Sunset Community Garden required members to pledge solidarity with Palestine, which led to tensions with Jewish residents. The city revoked the group's license due to violations of Parks Department guidelines, but the garden was allowed to continue operating for now.

The garden, now renamed Jardin de Santa Cecilia, in honor of Latina trans advocate Cecilia Gentili, celebrated the judge's decision as a legal victory and a lifeline for the community. The group accused the city of trying to erase their tribute to Gentili and punish their solidarity with oppressed peoples. The case will return to court next month, with the hope of securing a permanent ruling in favor of the garden.

Despite efforts to work with the garden leadership, the Parks Department expressed disappointment in their disregard for rules upheld by GreenThumb community gardens. The goal remains to ensure that community gardens are managed responsibly and remain inclusive for all individuals, regardless of background. The future of the garden as a sanctuary for marginalized communities will be determined in the upcoming court proceedings.
