Vallejo Man Convicted of Human Trafficking and Sexual Exploitation Charges
A man in Vallejo, California, was convicted of human trafficking for sexual exploitation and other charges after forcing a woman into sex work when she rejected his advances. Elon Ocyris Whitaker, 40, is awaiting sentencing in July following a trial, according to Monterey County District Attorney Jeannine M. Pacioni. Whitaker initially befriended the woman and gave her gifts, but when she declined his romantic interest, he coerced her into engaging in commercial sex work to repay him. The woman called 911 from a motel in Marina, where police found her crying and heard Whitaker demanding money. Prosecutors commended the woman for seeking help and testifying courageously. Whitaker's attorney has not responded to requests for comment. The incident occurred about 32 miles north of San Francisco.
