Osceola County Sheriff Marcos Lopez Charged with Racketeering in Florida

The Osceola County Sheriff Marcos Lopez was charged with racketeering in Florida for his alleged involvement in a criminal gambling operation. Governor Ron DeSantis suspended Lopez from his position following the accusations. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier emphasized the importance of upholding the law and holding all lawbreakers accountable, regardless of their position or power. Lopez faces charges of racketeering and conspiracy to commit racketeering, both serious offenses under Florida law.

A joint federal and state investigation uncovered the illegal gambling scheme in central Florida, which reportedly generated over $21.6 million in illicit proceeds. Lopez was accused of supporting the illegal gambling enterprise and receiving profits in exchange for his involvement. The attorney general stated that Lopez used his position as sheriff to shield the enterprise from law enforcement and unlawfully engaged in the operation for personal gain.

The Department of Homeland Security shared a video of Lopez's arrest, showing officials handcuffing him as he questioned the reason for his arrest. Lopez and four associates allegedly operated a gambling house at Eclipse Social Club in Kissimmee, Osceola County. The business started in 2024, the year Lopez was reelected as sheriff. Following his arrest, Lopez is currently held at the Lake County Jail, while Christopher Blackmon has been appointed as the new sheriff of Osceola County.
