Kennett, Missouri Celebrates the Return of Ming Li Hui, Known as Carol, from Immigration Detention

Residents of Kennett, Missouri, are rejoicing over the recent release of Ming Li Hui, known as Carol, who was freed from immigration detention after spending more than a month in jail. Hui, a mother of three who arrived in the U.S. from Hong Kong twenty years ago, was detained for overstaying her tourist visa and faced deportation. However, she was released under a federal immigration program that provides temporary protection to immigrants from certain countries, including Hong Kong.
The community of Kennett came together to support Hui's release, organizing fundraisers and a petition to bring her home. The staff at John's Waffle and Pancake House, where Hui worked, raised funds and collected signatures for the cause. Despite the town's strong support for Trump, residents were shocked by Hui's arrest and emphasized that they did not vote for deporting mothers like her.
Hui's attorney credited the community's support for her release, stating that it would not have been possible without their backing. Hui's neighbor drove four hours to pick her up from jail, and upon her return to Kennett, she was greeted by her family and numerous residents at the restaurant. The emotional reunion between Hui and her children brought tears to everyone present, highlighting the love and support she received from the community.
While Hui's release is temporary, her lawyer remains hopeful that she can stay in the U.S. He emphasized that the situation is not completely resolved but expressed optimism about her future in the country. Hui is scheduled to report to immigration authorities in June for further proceedings. The community of Kennett continues to stand by her side, welcoming her home with open arms and celebrating her return with heartfelt joy and gratitude.
