Important Recall Notice: Midea Air Conditioners with Mold Growth Concerns

Midea has issued a voluntary recall of approximately 1.7 million U and U+ Smart air conditioners due to concerns about mold growth caused by slow drainage of pooled water in the units. This recall comes at a time when temperatures are on the rise in the U.S. and summer is approaching quickly. The unique design of the Midea air conditioners, which allows users to close their window 'through' the unit, has made them popular among consumers. The recall also affects around 45,900 units sold in Canada.

Reports have surfaced of mold growth in at least 152 instances involving these air conditioners, with 17 cases of consumers experiencing symptoms like respiratory infections, allergic reactions, coughing, sneezing, and sore throats due to mold exposure. The affected white air conditioners bear brand names such as Midea, Comfort Aire, Danby, Frigidaire, Insignia, Keystone, LBG Products, Mr. Cool, Perfect Aire, and Sea Breeze, and were available in three cooling power sizes: 8,000, 10,000, and 12,000 BTU.

These air conditioners were sold between March 2020 and May 2025 for prices ranging from $280 to $500 at various retailers like Costco, Menards, Home Depot, Best Buy, and online through platforms like Midea, Amazon, Costco, and Home Depot. Consumers affected by the recall can reach out to Midea for a repair or refund based on the purchase or manufacture date. Those opting for a refund will need to return the unit to Midea using a provided shipping label or submit a photo showing the cut power cord.

For repairs, consumers can contact Midea to have a technician install a new drain plug or receive a repair kit with a new drain plug and bubble level, depending on the model. Individuals who wish to continue using their air conditioners while awaiting repairs should visit the Midea website for instructions on how to inspect their unit before continued use. For more information on the recall, consumers can visit the Midea website and navigate to the "Recall Information" section or call 888-345-0256 between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday.
