Beware of Celebrity Impersonator Scams: How to Protect Yourself from Fraudulent Schemes
A West Fargo resident named Mary Pickarell received a text message claiming to be from Travis Kelce's mother, Donna, offering her a Mother's Day prize from Taylor Swift. The prize included a personal visit from Swift and a new pickup truck. To claim the prize, Pickarell was asked to pay a $100 fee via a Walmart gift card. After paying the fee, Pickarell realized it was a scam as neither Swift nor the truck arrived. She reported the incident to the police but was unable to recover the money.
Impersonator scams, such as the one Pickarell fell victim to, have become increasingly common. In 2024, victims lost $2.95 billion to imposter scams, according to the Federal Trade Commission. Scammers use various tactics, including pretending to be celebrities like Taylor Swift, to deceive people into providing sensitive information or making payments using unconventional methods like gift cards.
The advancement of AI technology has made celebrity scams more sophisticated. Criminals now create deep-fake videos impersonating famous personalities to trick individuals into giving them money. These scams can take the form of romance scams, fake endorsements, or fake prize giveaways, all designed to exploit people's trust and admiration for celebrities.
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel issued a warning about celebrity scams, urging people to be cautious and skeptical of requests for money from famous figures. If you suspect a scam, the FTC recommends searching online for information about the celebrity and the supposed endorsement to verify its authenticity. In case you fall victim to a scam, it is essential to report the incident to the authorities and the financial services provider to seek assistance in recovering your funds.
By reporting scams and fraudulent activities, you can help prevent others from falling prey to similar schemes. Stay vigilant and cautious when dealing with requests for money or personal information, especially from individuals claiming to be celebrities. Remember, it's always better to verify the legitimacy of such requests before taking any action to avoid becoming a victim of a scam.
