Tragic Accident in Kill Devil Hills: 84-Year-Old Man Struck by Postal Carrier Van

An 84-year-old man tragically lost his life after being struck by a postal carrier van during a routine walk to his mailbox in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina. The incident occurred on May 19, and the victim, James Hofler, passed away from his injuries on May 22, according to the Kill Devil Hills Police Department. The driver of the vehicle, 53-year-old Amy Hudler, was identified as the operator of the mail carrier vehicle owned by the United States Postal Service. The collision occurred as Hudler was backing the vehicle on Portsmouth Street and struck Hofler as he was crossing the roadway to check his mailbox.

Following the accident, Amy Hudler immediately called for assistance and cooperated with law enforcement at the scene. James Hofler was initially taken to the Outer Banks Health Hospital in Nags Head and later transferred to a medical facility on the mainland, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. Hofler, a Navy veteran and resident of Kill Devil Hills, was remembered in an obituary that stated he passed away at East Carolina University Health Medical Center in Greenville, N.C.

In the aftermath of the tragic incident, Amy Hudler was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle by authorities. Kill Devil Hills, where the accident took place, is located approximately 200 miles east of Raleigh. The community mourns the loss of James Hofler and extends condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.
