Chinese Researcher Accused of Smuggling Crop-Killing Fungus into the US: A Threat to American Agriculture
A Chinese researcher, Yunqing Jian, is facing accusations of assisting in smuggling a harmful crop-killing fungus into the United States. She appeared in a Detroit courtroom for a detention hearing and will remain in custody until she can hire her own lawyer. A new detention hearing is scheduled for June 13. Jian, a Chinese national and University of Michigan researcher, was arrested after her boyfriend, Zunyong Liu, was caught with samples of the fungus at the Detroit Metropolitan Airport last July.
The fungus, Fusarium graminearum, has the potential to cause significant damage to American crops if manipulated to resist treatment. Liu, a researcher at a Chinese university, was found with the samples and intended to study them at the University of Michigan lab where Jian worked. The incident raised concerns about the security of the American food supply, with officials characterizing it as a potential attack.
Investigations revealed that Jian and Liu had discussed smuggling fungus samples past US Customs since at least 2022. Jian signed a document pledging support to the Communist Party of China and Marxist ideologies before Liu's encounter in Detroit. Both were charged with conspiring to smuggle the harmful pathogen into the US, while Liu remains at large with an arrest warrant issued against him.
The fungus, Fusarium graminearum, is already present in the US and causes significant agricultural losses annually. However, if modified for resistance or virulence, it could pose a critical risk to US food supplies. The case highlights the importance of safeguarding against the smuggling of harmful pathogens that could threaten agricultural security and food production in the country.
