Tragic Discovery: Massive Sperm Whale Found Dead Off Oregon Coast

A massive 53-foot sea creature was found dead and washed ashore off the coast of Oregon. The adult male sperm whale was discovered between Del Ray and Sunset Beach, 12 miles north of Seaside. Researchers from the Seaside Aquarium and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Fisheries West Coast conducted a necropsy on the whale and found two cuts on its head, indicating it was hit by a vessel. Sperm whales are endangered species that can grow up to 60 feet long and weigh over 40 tons. They have a lifespan of up to 60 years and feed on squid, sharks, and fish.

The whale's carcass will remain on the beach, providing a food source for eagles and coyotes as it decomposes over time. Seaside, located about 80 miles northwest of Portland, is a popular spot for marine life sightings and research. The discovery of the dead sperm whale sheds light on the dangers marine animals face from human activities such as vessel strikes. Researchers will continue to monitor and study the impact of such incidents on the local marine ecosystem.
