Tragic Death of 2-Year-Old Leads to Murder Charges for Illinois Couple

An Illinois couple faced serious charges after their 2-year-old daughter tragically died from a drug overdose in their Homer Glenn home. Edward Weiher, 49, and Alexa Balen, 28, were initially charged with neglect but were later charged with first-degree murder in connection with their daughter Trinity's death on November 6, 2024. The couple failed to administer Narcan correctly to the toddler, opting to order a second dose through Uber instead of calling 911 immediately.

Authorities discovered disturbing conditions in the couple's home, with garbage, food, urine, and feces covering the floor. Suspected cocaine and heroin were found on countertops and tables, along with burnt tin foil believed to be from heroin use. Heroin was also found on a mattress where the family slept, including the couple's six-year-old daughter.

Weiher claimed they were suffering from a gas leak, but Balen admitted to police that they regularly used heroin. She also confessed to attempting to use Narcan on Trinity and ordering more through Uber when the first dose failed. The couple finally called 911 after the second Narcan did not work, but it was too late. Trinity was taken to the hospital but did not survive.

A pathologist determined that Trinity could have survived if 911 had been called immediately when she showed signs of an overdose. Balen's six-year-old daughter was placed in state custody after testing positive for fentanyl and cocaine. Weiher and Balen were initially charged with child endangerment and possession of a controlled substance, but they now face murder charges. Their next court appearance is scheduled for June 27.

In conclusion, the tragic death of 2-year-old Trinity due to a drug overdose has led to serious charges against her parents, Edward Weiher and Alexa Balen. The neglect and delay in seeking medical help for Trinity's overdose have resulted in first-degree murder charges for the couple. The disturbing conditions in their home and the revelation of their heroin use have further compounded the tragic situation. The legal proceedings will continue as the couple faces the consequences of their actions.
