US Capitol Police Union Disapproves of Interim Chief Appointment Amid Trust and Integrity Concerns

The U.S. Capitol Police Officers' Union has expressed disapproval of the appointment of Sean Gallagher as the interim chief of the force, citing concerns about his trustworthiness and integrity. Gallagher's appointment came after Capitol Police Chief Thomas Manger announced his retirement in May. The Capitol Police Board selected Gallagher as the acting head of the USCP and is tasked with finding a permanent replacement for Manger. The union had previously called for a new chief with integrity and the trust of front-line officers to succeed Manger, but they believe Gallagher does not meet these criteria. They highlighted allegations of his involvement in an overtime scam and his role in the failures during the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.

Gus Papathanasiou, the chair of the USCP union, expressed disappointment in Gallagher's appointment, stating that he does not meet the necessary standards of trust and integrity to lead the U.S. Capitol Police force. The union is concerned about problem officers being promoted instead of facing appropriate consequences for their actions. The situation is still developing, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
