"Voluntary Departure Program: DHS Charter Flight Offers Migrants $1,000 Stipend for Self-Deportation"

[!CDATA[The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) recently organized its inaugural charter flight for migrants who voluntarily agreed to leave the United States, offering them a $1,000 stipend as part of the program. The flight transported 64 individuals from Colombia and Honduras back to their home countries. DHS clarified that this was a voluntary charter flight and not an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) enforcement operation. Participants in the program were provided with travel assistance, a $1,000 stipend, and the opportunity to potentially return to the U.S. legally in the future. The Trump administration introduced the initiative, which includes travel assistance and the stipend, for migrants opting to self-deport through the CBP Home App. Migrants were typically given around three weeks to prepare before leaving the country. The CBP Home app, a revamped version of the CBP One app under the Biden administration, allows migrants to schedule appointments at ports of entry for asylum claims. Despite the benefits offered, the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) advised caution, highlighting potential consequences such as being barred from returning to the U.S. in the future. AILA emphasized the importance of seeking legal advice before accepting the assistance. DHS emphasized that individuals in the program chose to return to their home countries voluntarily and showcased images of migrants disembarking from planes with smiles, greeted by host country governments bearing gifts like stuffed animals for children. In Honduras, returnees were also eligible for $100 in government assistance and food vouchers.]]
