"United States and Italy Collaborate to Recover Missing WWII Soldiers in Italy"
[!CDATA[The United States and Italy have joined forces to enhance the search and recovery efforts for American soldiers who went missing in action during World War II. The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) and Italy's culture ministry have signed a pact to improve operations in locating and retrieving the remains of fallen military members who were never found in Italy. This agreement also includes the protection of archaeological sites involved in the search efforts, as stated by Italian officials. During World War II, the Italian peninsula witnessed intense battles from 1943 to 1945, following the Allied invasion of Sicily and the campaign to free Italy from Nazi forces. While the exact number of missing U.S. soldiers who lost their lives in Italy during World War II is challenging to determine, approximately 72,000 American servicemembers are still unaccounted for from the war globally, according to DPAA. Since the 1970s, the remains of nearly 1,000 Americans who perished in World War II have been identified through recovery efforts. Forensic experts at DPAA dedicate years to utilizing various methods such as DNA analysis, dental records, sinus records, and chest X-rays to identify the remains of service members who died in combat. Recently, a 23-year-old U.S. soldier who went missing during an aquatic mission in Italy during World War II was successfully identified. The memorandum signed on Tuesday by Luigi La Rocca, the head of Italy's Department for Heritage Protection, and Kelly McKeague, the director of DPAA, signifies a commitment to recovering the remains of fallen soldiers in Italy. Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli emphasized the importance of combining the right to research and remember those who died during the war with the protection of the archaeological heritage under the ministry of culture's responsibility. The collaboration between the United States and Italy in recovering the remains of missing American soldiers in Italy is a significant step towards honoring and remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice during World War II.]]
