"Oregon Man Found Guilty of Deceiving and Exploiting Victims in Bankruptcy Fraud Case"

[!CDATA[An individual from Oregon has been found guilty by a federal bankruptcy court for deceiving women he pursued romantically and their elderly parents. Jason Gillis, a door-to-door salesman, convinced these individuals to invest in his business ventures but misused their funds for personal expenses. He even exploited a 79-year-old stroke survivor and used her and her daughter's identities to accumulate debts in their names. Gillis filed for chapter 7 bankruptcy in August 2024 to evade legal actions against him, but the court ruled against discharging over $1.7 million in debts. The U.S. Trustee Program, responsible for overseeing bankruptcy cases and preventing fraud, took action against Gillis in Portland federal court. Despite Gillis not responding to the complaint, a default judgment was made in favor of the U.S. Trustee Program. Investigations revealed that Gillis concealed his business interests by transferring ownership to victims while maintaining control and forging signatures on official documents. He also provided false information about his financial status and fraudulent activities during the bankruptcy proceedings. Gillis engaged in fraudulent activities, including scamming a woman's elderly mother out of a recreational vehicle valued at approximately $150,000. He leased the RV from his then-girlfriend's mother, lived in it, and later refused to disclose its whereabouts or make lease payments. The U.S. Trustee Program emphasized that bankruptcy should not serve as a refuge for fraudsters and is dedicated to uncovering deceptive schemes that harm innocent victims. Acting U.S. Trustee Jonas V. Anderson for Oregon and other states reiterated the program's commitment to combating fraudulent practices within the bankruptcy system.]]
