"FDA Recall: Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Bedner Growers Cucumbers"
[!CDATA[The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a nationwide recall of cucumbers due to a salmonella outbreak affecting more than two dozen individuals in multiple states. The recall pertains to cucumbers grown by Bedner Growers in South Florida between April 29 and May 19, distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales to various retailers, distribution centers, wholesalers, and food service distributors across the country. The affected cucumbers have been linked to a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Montevideo, resulting in 26 reported cases of illness, with nine individuals requiring hospitalization. The affected states include Alabama, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, North Carolina, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. The FDA's investigation identified Bedner Growers as the common grower of the cucumbers associated with the outbreak. Symptoms of salmonella infection include diarrhea, fever, stomach cramps, and vomiting, typically appearing within 12 to 72 hours after consuming contaminated food. While most individuals recover within a few days, severe cases may lead to dehydration requiring medical attention. The FDA advises individuals experiencing symptoms of salmonella infection, especially after consuming cucumbers, to seek medical care promptly. Consumers are urged to discard cucumbers if they are unsure of their origin or if they suspect they may be part of the recall. Restaurants, retailers, and distributors who handled the affected cucumbers are advised to sanitize surfaces and containers that came into contact with the produce. The CDC recommends following food safety practices such as washing hands, utensils, and surfaces regularly, rinsing fruits and vegetables under running water, and refrigerating perishable items promptly. Peeling produce and avoiding cross-contamination with raw meat and poultry are also essential precautions to prevent foodborne illnesses. The FDA and CDC are collaborating with state and local authorities to investigate the outbreak further. Consumers are encouraged to inquire about the source of cucumbers when dining out and to follow proper food handling guidelines to minimize the risk of foodborne illnesses. It is crucial for individuals to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to safeguard their health and well-being.]]
