"Remembering Pvt. Roman Cherubini: A Hero's Journey from Bridgeton to Burma"
[!CDATA[Decades after his sacrifice during World War II, the remains of U.S. Army Pvt. Roman Cherubini, a soldier from Bridgeton, New Jersey, have been identified by the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency. Cherubini, a 22-year-old twin, was serving with the 475th Infantry Regiment in the China-India-Burma Theater when he was killed. His remains were located in various burial sites, including the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu, Hawaii. In 2022, the DPAA conducted tests on his exhumed remains, leading to his identification through dental, anthropological, and mitochondrial DNA analysis. Cherubini was part of Merrill's Marauders, a light infantry formation specialized in jungle warfare behind enemy lines. The Marauders engaged in battles against Japanese forces in the jungles of Burma in 1944. They played a crucial role in seizing a strategic airfield near the village of Myitkyina with the assistance of Chinese infantry regiments. The Japanese forces in Myitkyina were defeated on August 3, 1944, after intense jungle combat. Cherubini lost his life on June 16, 1944, during the battle for Myitkyina, although the exact circumstances of his death remain unknown. Following the completion of their mission, Merrill's Marauders were disbanded. The Marauders had marched 750 miles through the jungle and participated in five major engagements. Many of the Marauders succumbed to disease and enemy actions, with numerous individuals lost in the challenging jungle terrain. The identification of Pvt. Roman Cherubini brings closure to his family and honors his service and sacrifice during World War II.]]
