This development follows a 14-year conflict in Syria that resulted in significant destruction and loss of life. The debt owed to the World Bank's International Development Association has been settled, enabling the World Bank to reengage with Syria and address the country's development needs. The first project under this reengagement focuses on improving access to electricity, a critical issue in Syria where severe shortages persist, with many citizens living in poverty and facing limited electricity supply. Qatar has already started supplying natural gas to Syria through Jordan to alleviate electricity cuts.
