"Overcoming Adversity: Jaclyn Keely's Inspiring Journey to the RBC Brooklyn Half Marathon"
[!CDATA[Jaclyn Keely, a 29-year-old Brooklyn resident, is gearing up to participate in the RBC Brooklyn Half Marathon organized by the New York Road Runners this Saturday. Despite facing a challenging battle with Stage 1 mucinous adenocarcinoma and undergoing surgery to remove part of her left lung, Keely remains determined to cross the finish line with a smile. Mucinous adenocarcinoma is a rare form of cancer that can develop in various organs, including the breast, colon, rectum, and lungs. This type of cancer is characterized by abnormal cell growth due to DNA mutations, resulting in the formation of a tumor surrounded by mucus. Keely's health journey began when her lung collapsed unexpectedly in 2018, leading to a diagnosis of a spontaneous pneumothorax. Following multiple scans over the years, a nodule was discovered on her lung, which was later confirmed to be cancerous after a biopsy. Despite experiencing chest pain and shortness of breath, Keely remained unaware of her condition until the diagnosis. Prior to her cancer diagnosis, Keely had already embarked on a running journey in November 2023, setting her sights on completing a marathon. Despite the setbacks caused by her cancer diagnosis and subsequent surgery, she gradually resumed running, starting with short distances and gradually increasing her mileage to regain her strength and endurance. Although the lower lobe of her lung that was removed will not regenerate, Keely has adapted to her new normal and continues to monitor her health through regular scans. She hopes that her story will inspire others to prioritize their health by undergoing recommended medical tests and screenings, especially as certain cancers are becoming more prevalent in younger individuals. As Keely prepares to participate in the upcoming half marathon, she emphasizes the importance of early detection through screenings, as lung cancer can affect individuals of all ages, regardless of smoking history. Her resilience and determination serve as a reminder that with perseverance and medical vigilance, one can overcome unexpected challenges and achieve their goals.]]
