"Preview of the 150th Preakness Stakes: Favorites, Contenders, and Absentees"
[!CDATA[The 150th running of the Preakness Stakes will not feature Kentucky Derby winner Sovereignty, who is opting to rest for the Belmont Stakes. Despite the absence of a Triple Crown contender, the race still boasts some notable horses competing for a substantial purse at Pimlico. Journalism, coming off a second-place finish in the Kentucky Derby, is the morning line favorite at 8-5 and will be racing this Saturday. Other Kentucky Derby contenders in the Preakness field include Sandman, who won the Arkansas Derby but finished seventh in the Derby, and American Promise, the Virginia Derby winner who placed 17th at Churchill Downs. Rodriguez, expected to be a top-five choice in the Kentucky Derby, was sidelined due to a foot bruise, preventing him from competing in the Preakness. Bob Baffert will have a presence at the Preakness with Goal Oriented, a lightly-raced horse with two wins in two starts, including an allowance victory on Derby Day. Baffert, a seasoned trainer with eight Preakness Stakes wins, most recently won in 2023 with National Treasure. The $2 million Preakness Stakes will take place on Saturday, May 17, at Pimlico Race Course, with NBC providing coverage from 4-7:30 PM ET and post time set for 7:01 PM.
