A common sugar substitute used in sugar-free energy drinks, protein bars and snack foods could contribute to a higher risk of vascular health issues, including stroke, according to a new study.Erythritol, an artificial low-calorie sweetener, is often marketed as “healthy,” but researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder’s Integrative Vascular Biology Laboratory found that just one serving of the compound in one beverage could be harmful for brain and blood vessel health.“While erythritol is widely used in sugar-free products marketed as healthier alternatives, more research is needed to fully understand its impact on vascular health,” said Auburn Berry, lead author ..
